The Lancashire County Council Teaching Assistant Skills Bootcamp is a 6-week intensive programme designed to prepare adults for careers as teaching assistants or education support staff in primary and secondary schools. Course Overview

This Level 3 Skills Bootcamp supports learners to gain the knowledge, practical understanding and professional behaviours required for teaching assistant and school support roles.

The programme combines nationally recognised units with employability training and progression support, offering a clear route into education employment across Lancashire.

Course Description

Delivered over six weeks, this hybrid programme blends face-to-face learning with online delivery to provide a structured and supportive learning experience.

Learners take part in interactive lessons, group discussions, scenario-based tasks and guided assignments covering safeguarding, SEND support, child development and employability skills. Continuous tutor support ensures learners are well prepared for both assessment and progression into work.

Course Units & Content

Learners will complete training covering:

  • Safeguarding Children and Young People – roles, responsibilities and protection

  • Supporting Learning of Children and Young People with SEND – inclusion strategies and classroom support

  • Child and Young Person Development – key principles of growth and learning

  • Employability Skills – CV writing, interview preparation and career guidance

Delivery Method

This course is delivered using a hybrid model, combining online and face-to-face learning.

Online Learning

  • Delivered via Microsoft Teams

  • Morning session: 9:30am – 11:30am

  • Afternoon session: 12:30pm – 2:00pm

Optional Learner Support

  • Daily optional support session: 4:00pm – 4:30pm

Face-to-Face Learning

Sessions held at a local Lancashire venue

It’s ideal if you’re new to education, changing career, or returning to learning and want practical, job-focused training that leads directly into employment. You must be aged 19+, live in Lancashire, and be committed to progressing into a school-based role.

This course is fully funded through the Skills Bootcamp programme for eligible learners.

Entry Requirements

To enrol on this course, learners must:

  • Be aged 19 or over

  • Be resident in Lancashire (or an eligible area)

  • Have basic English and IT skills to engage in blended learning

  • Have access to a computer or tablet (mobile phone access is not suitable)

  • Have a reliable internet connection

  • Be able to commit to face-to-face sessions, online learning, assignments and employability activities

  • Have a genuine interest in working in early years childcare or education

Funding Criteria

  • Residency within a funded Lancashire postcode

  • Must meet Skills Bootcamp residency and eligibility requirements

  • Commitment to progressing into employment within the early years sector
